Turbo and hybrid also considered
Toyota GT 86's chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has announced the company is testing a GT 86 fitted with a larger engine.
Many are eagerly waiting for the Toyota GT 86 / Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ trio to get a power boost from the 2.0-liter boxer engine and this will happen sooner or later. While Subaru had us fooled with its BRZ tS, Toyota is testing a GT 86 equipped with an engine that has more displacement than the stock 2.0 liters. In addition, they are also trying out turbocharging and a hybrid system.
According to Sydney Morning Herald, Toyota will probably opt for increasing displacement to 2.5 liters which should enable the engine to develop around 250 HP (184 kW), representing a 50 HP (37 kW) power hike over the current model.

Interestingly, Tada confirmed a concept for the next-gen model is already in development and "hinted that it could be a radically different car, potentially dropping the boxer engine altogether."
